Organic Chemistry in Boxing

My favorite organic molecule is the organic polymer, polyurethane. Polyurethane is one of the most important raw materials used in making boxing gloves and boxing mitts.  The high-density polyurethane absorbs energy by compressing itself. It is essential for a boxer to have the proper padding inside his or her gloves to protect their hands during striking in a bout and to offer protection against facial injuries. Polyurethanes are also known to the public as flexible foams and are extremely versatile in use. The chemistry behind the foam in beds, the cushion in furniture and the insulation inside buildings all stem from the scientific developments and work of Dr. Otto Bayer, a German industrial chemist. Dr. Otto Bayer was the first to discover and synthesize polyurethane from polyisocyanate and polyol. Because of Dr. Bayer, Bayer AG (the global enterprise) continues its research and development on high-tech materials under the company name Bayer MaterialScience AG headquarted in Leverkusen, Germany.
